In contrast to popular belief, experiences of racism among racial and ethnic minorities in the United States did not end with the civil rights movement . Racism continues to be quite pervasive in the day-to-day lives of people of color; although it has evolved into a more complex and dynamic process. Rather than blatant, institutionalized, and explicit forms of discrimination, it has become more subtle, ambiguous, and unintentional that manifests itself through the interactions of individuals, institutions and the larger U.S. culture.

As a psychologist, I am interested in how racial and ethnic minorities internalize and cope with these dynamic experiences of racism. I am particularly interested in racial and ethnic minority groups that oftentimes are overlooked in the discussion of race and racism, such as Asian Americans. Our research lab attempts to address the following questions:

What are the unique types of racism experienced by racial and ethnic minorities on a individual, community, and institutional level?
How do these experiences shape the identity and development of these group members?
What are the social, psychological, and physiological consequences of racism?
How do racial and ethnic minorities effectively cope with different types of racism?
Do the strategies and its effectiveness change over time, situation, and by other contexts? Why?
